Introduction

Restaurateur is a simple and stylish one-page theme for restaurants.

These docs will help you install and configure the theme. If you know what you're looking for, use the navigation on the left to jump directly to the section that interests you. Otherwise, continue reading and we'll get you on your way!

A live demo is up at themes.appsandicedlattes.com if you need help visualizing how any part of the theme is designed to look and function.

Installing Restaurateur

It only takes a few steps to install a new WordPress theme. If you're the cautious type, you can backup your site before doing anything. If you do run into any issues while installing the theme, you can FTP into your site and remove the theme by deleting the /wp-content/themes/restaurateur-wp folder. This'll revert your site to the default theme.

Install Restaurateur in 6 Easy Steps

  1. Download the theme from Etsy (it'll be a zip file)
  2. Don't unzip it!
  3. Go to Appearance > Themes in your WordPress Dashboard and click the "Add New" button at the top of the page
  4. Click the "Upload Theme" button at the top of the page
  5. Select the "restaurateur-wp.zip" file you downloaded from Etsy
  6. Click the "Install Now" button

That's it! Once the theme has installed successfully, you can activate it and continue with the documentation.

Restaurant Info

The crux of the Restaurateur theme is the restaurant info show atop the homepage. Displayed in a translucent overlay above the top background image, it showcases everything a potential customer needs to know about your restaurant at a glance.

Go to Restaurant Info and you'll see fields for address, phone, email, hours and description.

Address

The address is also displayed in an interactive map at the bottom of the homepage. You can include as much or as little of your restaurant's address as you like; a city/state combo will work just as well as a full address.

Phone and Email

If you include a phone number and/or email address, users on compatible web browsers will be able to click/tap them to call and email you directly. This is especially useful when users bring up your restaurant's page on mobile devices.

Hours

You can add up to seven individual entries, one for each day of the week. There's no required format, but you can review the live demo for ideas.

Description

The description separates the two main theme images and functions as a transition for users to learn more about your restaurant. A couple of sentences is all you really need, but you can write a full essay if you've got a lot to share!

Images

Restaurateur uses three customizable images in its one-page layout. Retina images (@2x) are supported, but are entirely optional. More info about retina images can be found in the theme options under Images > Top Background Image. Look for the link "How do retina images work?"

Top Background Image

Arguably the most important aspect of the theme. This is the image displayed at the top of the homepage, behind the restaurant info and social buttons. It's the first thing visitors will see when they visit your site. You should use a large image that's at least 1280x800.

Main Body Image

This is the image displayed in the body of the homepage, below the restaurant description. It acts as a visual separator between the restaurant info and the interactive map and review site buttons.

Restaurant Logo
Favicon & Home Screen Icons

The restaurant logo is displayed in the static navbar at the top of the homepage. It can also be used for the favicon & home screen icons. If you don't include a logo image, the same configuration options for the favicon and home screen icons will be used to generate the logo image.

Social Media

You can add links to your social media profile and fan pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Go to Social Buttons and enter the username (or page name) for each service. They'll be displayed in the static navbar at the top of the homepage.

Facebook

Your Facebook page name is visible in your browser's address bar when you're on the page:

  • https://www.facebook.com/page-name

Twitter and Instagram

Your Twitter and Instagram usernames are what you use to login to each service. If you're on the web, they'll be visible in your browser's address bar:

  • https://twitter.com/username
  • http://instagram.com/username

Review Sites

You can add links to your restaurant on Foursquare, Yelp and TripAdvisor in the theme options. Nothing fancy here; just go to Review Site Buttons and enter the full url to each of your restaurant's pages. They'll be displayed below the interactive map at the bottom of the homepage.

Foursquare

Foursquare provides a shortlink for each restaurant page. It's displayed under the "Total Visitors" and "Total Visits" stats in the middle of the page. Just copy and paste this url into the theme options.

Yelp and TripAdvisor

Neither Yelp nor TripAdvisor provide shortlinks, so you'll just have to copy the entire url from your browser's address bar.

Analytics

Restaurateur supports Google Analytics right out of the box. Go to Analytics > Google Analytics in the Restaurateur Theme Options and paste in your Universal Analytics tracking code. No step two. Who said adding analytics to your site had to be hard?

How to Find Your Universal Analytics Tracking Code

  1. Login to Google Analytics
  2. Click on "Admin" in the navbar menu
  3. Select the appropriate account (left side) and property (middle)
  4. Click on "Tracking Info" under "Property"
  5. Click on "Tracking Code" in the submenu

You should see a piece of code like the following:

<script>
    (function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r;i[r]=i[r]||function(){
    (i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o),
    m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m)
    })(window,document,'script','//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga');

    ga('create', 'UA-12345678-9', 'auto');
    ga('send', 'pageview');
</script>

Copy the tracking code (it's highlighted in green in the example above) and paste it into the theme options.
